Girls Inc. to Host Day of the Girl Celebration

Girls Inc. of Monroe County Will Host the 1st Annual Day of the Girl Celebration

Bloomington, Ind., October 2, 2017 — Girls Inc. of Monroe County will host the first annual Day of the Girl Celebration on Wednesday, October 11.

The event will be held in the Girls Inc. Gym at 1108 West 8th Street from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. It will be cohosted by the IU Feminist Student Association and Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Central Indiana.
“We are incredibly excited to host this event with support from Big Brothers Big Sisters and the IU Feminist Student Association,” says Amy Stark, Executive Director of Girls Inc. of Monroe County. “Our community should celebrate the potential and accomplishments of Monroe County girls and the Indiana University women who support them every day.”
The event is open to the entire family and will be organized as an interactive roundtable activities. Groups providing activities include:

A special performance by Ladies First Acapella will take place at 6:00 pm.
The International Day of the Girl Child is a national day of recognition, established by the United Nations in 2011, as part of the 2030 Sustainability Development Goals. It aims to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges they face around the world. Girls Inc. will celebrate girls on this day to recognize their power, energy, and creativity, even in the face of discrimination, violence, and lack of education.

Girls Inc. of Monroe County has served girls in Monroe County since 1975. More than 600 girls from age five to eighteen participate in activities and sports at its West 8th Street center and in schools and agencies throughout Monroe County. Girls Inc. offers interactive, research-based activities that provide academic enrichment and instruction in healthy living and life skills.
